Religions of the world – Key Beliefs

1.    Christianity
·        Jesus Christ is the messiah or the savior of human-kind
·        Christians follow the 10 Commandments

2.    Judaism
·        Jewish people are waiting for the messiah
·         They believe they are the ‘chosen people’ because of their covenant (agreement) with God.
3.    The 5 Pillars of Islam:
· Allah is the only god
· pray 5 times a day
· give alms to the needy
·  observe Ramadan (fasting ritual)
· At least once in your life go on a pilgrimage to Mecca

4.    Hinduism

 ·       Believe that your positive and negative actions will be added up to determine your fate (karma)
·       Believe in reincarnation (you will come back to life in a different form)
5.    Buddhism
  
·        Believe the way to end suffering is through the 8 Fold Path
·        Believe the ultimate goal in life is Nirvana (true happiness)
·        Believe in reincarnation and karma
  
6.    Sikhism
·       Believe that an individual must develop a personal relationship with God.  They use gurus to help guide them in this relationship. 
·       Salvation is achieved through meditation.

  7.    Shintoism
·       All natural things have spirits called kami which should be respected/worshipped.  (Rocks, rivers, animals)


Other Important Concepts Related to Religions

Atheism
·       the belief that there are no gods

Religious tolerance
·       the ability to accept the fact that other people may have different religious beliefs than you

Religious intolerance
·       the inability to accept the fact that other people may have different religious beliefs than you

Ex. Hitler was intolerant of Jewish people, so he tried to exterminate them.
